Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been handed a €14,400 fine and an eight-month driving ban after admitting to driving under the influence of alcohol in Gran Canaria, adding an unwanted development just a day before he is due to appear in court over a separate case.
The 23-year-old accepted the punishment following a fast-track hearing on August 19 after being stopped by police in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, with reports in Spain stating that his alcohol reading was well above the legal limit.
Asencio admitted the offence, accepted the prosecutor’s request and expressed remorse over his actions.
The timing of the conviction is particularly significant because the Real Madrid centre-back is scheduled to begin another legal battle on Thursday, September 3, alongside former academy players Ferrán Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez and Andrés García.
The case centres on intimate footage allegedly recorded in Gran Canaria in 2023 involving two young women, one of whom was underage at the time.
Asencio is not accused of taking part in the encounter or recording the footage. Prosecutors allege that the video reached his phone and that he subsequently showed it to another person, leading to charges connected to privacy and the alleged sharing of intimate material.
The defender has maintained his position in the case, while his legal team is expected to seek his acquittal.
Recent Spanish reporting indicates that the two women have forgiven Asencio after he apologised privately and compensated them, a development that could have an impact on the proceedings because of the nature of the charges against him.
Meanwhile, the other three defendants face separate and more serious allegations linked to the recording and distribution of the footage.
Asencio’s immediate focus now turns to the courtroom, with the latest drink-driving conviction ensuring that his off-field situation has attracted renewed attention just as the much more significant trial begins.
