Rodri’s Barcelona debut ends with strong message to Lamine Yamal
Rodri celebrated his Barcelona debut with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club while admitting he needs time to regain his rhythm and backing Lamine Yamal to rediscover his best form.
Rodri Hernandez finally began his Barcelona career on a winning note as Hansi Flick’s side defeated Athletic Club 2-0 at Camp Nou to maintain their perfect start to the new La Liga season.
The Spain midfielder entered the contest from the bench in the second half, replacing Raphinha in the 63rd minute, and received a warm reception from the home supporters as he made his first appearance in the famous Barcelona colours.
Raphinha had earlier put the hosts ahead before Fermin Lopez added a second late in the game, giving Barcelona six points from their opening two matches.
For Rodri, however, the result was only part of the significance of the evening. After spending an unusually long summer away from competitive football, the midfielder acknowledged that he still has work to do before reaching full sharpness.
His debut was therefore less about immediately dominating games and more about beginning the process of rebuilding his fitness and understanding with his new teammates.
The former Manchester City star also offered an early glimpse of the leadership qualities Barcelona will expect from him, particularly when discussing Lamine Yamal.
The young forward has faced questions about his form after a difficult period, but Rodri publicly backed him and stressed that his quality remains unquestionable.
That support could become important as Barcelona attempt to balance a squad containing experienced stars with a group of exceptionally talented youngsters.
The victory over Athletic also highlighted the depth available to Flick, with Barcelona able to introduce Rodri without disrupting their control of the contest.
For the Catalan club, the bigger picture is increasingly encouraging: two wins from two, a strong attacking start and their marquee midfield signing gradually returning to competitive rhythm.
Rodri’s debut may have been brief, but it offered Barcelona an early indication of what his experience, composure and leadership could bring to their title defence.
