The agreement represents a late breakthrough after Tottenham had initially rejected Sunderland’s approach for the defender, who had become increasingly marginalised following the arrival of additional defensive options.
Danso joined Spurs permanently from Lens in 2025 after initially moving to north London on loan and played an important role during their Europa League-winning campaign. However, his position in the squad has changed this season, prompting the 27-year-old to seek a move in search of more regular first-team football.
Sunderland have identified defensive reinforcements as a priority and have now moved quickly to secure Danso before the transfer deadline.
The deal is understood to remain subject to the player completing his medical, after which the transfer can be formally completed.
Danso’s arrival would give Sunderland additional experience and physical presence at the heart of their defence as they continue competing in the Premier League and preparing for European football.
