Tottenham’s injury woes worsen as James Maddison faces spell on sidelines
James Maddison is expected to miss around two weeks after suffering a minor shoulder fracture, adding to Tottenham’s growing injury concerns at the start of the season.
James Maddison has suffered another injury setback, with Tottenham expecting the midfielder to be sidelined for around 10 days to two weeks after sustaining a minor shoulder fracture in the defeat to Brentford.
The 29-year-old was introduced from the bench during Spurs’ 3-0 Premier League loss but fell awkwardly and subsequently underwent scans, which revealed limited damage.
The update offers some relief because the injury is not considered serious, although it comes at an unfortunate time for a player who has only recently returned from a lengthy absence caused by an ACL problem.
Maddison missed most of the previous campaign and had been carefully managed during pre-season as Tottenham sought to avoid rushing his comeback.
His latest setback also arrives as Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi deals with several other fitness concerns, leaving the new boss with difficult decisions as he attempts to improve a squad that opened the Premier League campaign with a disappointing defeat.
Maddison will miss the Carabao Cup meeting with Charlton, while Tottenham will be hoping his recovery progresses quickly enough for him to return before the next international break.
The midfielder remains an important creative option for De Zerbi, particularly as Spurs attempt to establish a new attacking identity following a major summer rebuild.
Tottenham have invested heavily in their squad, but injuries to key players have already complicated preparations. There is, however, encouraging news elsewhere, with Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro returning to the matchday squad for the cup fixture.
Maddison’s latest problem therefore appears relatively short-term, but Tottenham will be keen to avoid another prolonged spell on the sidelines after the midfielder endured such a difficult period with his previous knee injury.
