Rayo argue their valuation is fair, pointing to underlying numbers that place Chavarria alongside Marc Cucurella, sold to Real Madrid for £51.8m.

Head coach Xabi Alonso reportedly pushed for the move after facing Chavarria last November. With four years left on his contract, Rayo hold firm financial leverage.

Rayo’s profitable model, similar to Spain’s traditional giants, lets them resist lower bids, even accounting for a 25% tax on sale profits. Chelsea’s one advantage: Chavarria wants the move.
