FIFA could be forced to adjust match-day protocol ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium after an air-quality health alert was issued in New York and New Jersey.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has reduced air quality across the region, prompting officials to advise residents to limit outdoor activity. Spain trained outdoors on Thursday, while Argentina are due to hold their session on Friday.

According to SPORTbible, the governing body may consider introducing additional breaks during play if conditions worsen, similar to measures used during a recent NWSL match between Gotham FC and Washington Spirit.
