Why Liverpool cannot host Real Madrid in the 2026/27 Champions League

A UEFA draw restriction means Liverpool cannot be paired with Real Madrid with Anfield as the home venue for a third consecutive Champions League league phase.

A UEFA regulation will prevent Liverpool from hosting Real Madrid at Anfield in the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, continuing a restriction designed to stop the same home fixture from occurring three seasons in succession.

The two European heavyweights have met at Anfield during the league phase in the previous two campaigns, making another Liverpool home fixture against Real Madrid unavailable under the competition’s draw conditions.

UEFA’s current regulations allow alternative draw conditions to be applied where necessary to avoid deadlock and accommodate competition constraints.

The restriction does not completely rule out another meeting between the clubs, however, as Real Madrid could potentially be drawn to host Liverpool in Spain.

The 2026/27 league-phase draw is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, with 36 clubs set to discover their eight opponents.
