Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has disclosed that he intends to pursue a career in football administration with the NFF, CAF, or FIFA after retirement, rather than becoming a coach, in order to drive impactful structural changes for Nigerian football.
Nigerian national team captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed that his post-retirement ambitions lie in football administration rather than coaching, expressing a desire to effect systemic change from the sport’s highest governing bodies.
Speaking on his plans for the next stage of his career, the veteran defender distanced himself from the traditional path of transitioning to the dugout, emphasizing instead the crucial need for ex-internationals to assume leadership roles within executive boardrooms.
“A lot of people ask me about coaching the national team, but I’m not sure that’s what I really want to do. I think we also need former players in the boardroom, working with the NFF, CAF and FIFA, because that’s where you can make the biggest change,” Troost-Ekong stated.
Driven by a vision to elevate Nigerian football beyond the achievements of his playing generation, he highlighted his ongoing preparations to transition into a governance role where he can directly influence policy and development.
“The way I’m preparing for this next stage of my career is by finding ways to become part of the solution. I want to help Nigeria reach greater heights than we managed during my time as a player,” he added, signaling a calculated shift toward sports diplomacy and executive leadership to foster long-term growth for the Super Eagles.
