CAF completes historic appointment of Samson Adamu as Substantive General Secretary
Samson Adamu has made history as the first Nigerian appointed substantive CAF General Secretary after previously serving in an acting capacity.
Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), securing one of the most influential administrative positions in African football.
The appointment was approved by CAF’s Executive Committee following a recruitment exercise involving several candidates. Adamu had been overseeing the position in an acting capacity since March 2026.
His confirmation makes him the first Nigerian to occupy the position in CAF’s 70-year history, marking a significant achievement for the country’s representation in continental football administration.
Adamu joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before progressing to Director of Tournaments and Events. He played important roles in organising major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.
The experienced administrator also holds a qualification from the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed confidence in the recruitment process, while Adamu is expected to oversee the organisation’s daily operations and help implement its strategic objectives.
His appointment follows the departure of former General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba.
