Furious Memphis Depay declares war on Corinthians after breaking agreement

The Netherlands’ all-time goalscorer Memphis Depay has accused Corinthians of reneging on an agreement to extend his contract and vowed to take action to protect his interests.

Memphis Depay has launched a furious response to Corinthians’ decision not to renew his contract, accusing the Brazilian club of breaking an agreement over a two-year extension.

The Netherlands forward said the deal had been agreed with the president and the club’s sporting, legal and financial departments.

Corinthians announced the decision after negotiations had progressed, citing concerns over the club’s financial health and long-term sustainability.

The club said taking on another commitment of that size was incompatible with its current financial obligations.

Depay strongly disputed that explanation, saying he was “very disappointed” that Corinthians had failed to honour what he described as an agreed extension. He maintained that he had respected the club throughout negotiations but was now being forced to protect his interests.

The 32-year-old also revealed that the dispute followed problems with delayed payments during his Corinthians spell. Reports indicate the club owes him a substantial amount, adding another layer of tension to the breakdown in negotiations.

Depay has promised to speak publicly about the dispute in the coming days and warned that he would not allow what he described as unacceptable behaviour to go unpunished. He leaves Corinthians after 79 appearances, 20 goals and three trophies.
