Smoking Gunners kick-off title defence with comprehensive Coventry win
Arsenal made an assured start to their Premier League title defence by sweeping aside newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night, extending the momentum from their impressive Community Shield triumph over Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s side controlled the contest from the outset and never appeared in serious danger of dropping points as they began their campaign with a statement performance against Frank Lampard’s returning top-flight side.
Kai Havertz broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, capitalising on a defensive lapse to give the hosts an early advantage, before Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal’s lead eight minutes later with a composed finish after Christos Tzolis helped create the opening.
The champions went into the interval firmly in command and continued to dictate proceedings after the restart, with captain Martin Odegaard adding a third just four minutes into the second half.
The Norwegian midfielder reacted sharply to another opening in the Coventry defence to put the result beyond doubt and complete a comfortable night for the hosts.
Arsenal had already underlined their ambitions by defeating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield the previous weekend, and their latest performance suggested Arteta’s squad has carried that confidence into the competitive campaign.
Tzolis was again involved in Arsenal’s attacking play following his influential display against City, while Saka marked his return to Premier League action with a goal.
Coventry, back in the top flight after 25 years away, struggled to cope with Arsenal’s intensity and technical quality but showed greater resistance as the second half progressed.
The result gives Arsenal an ideal platform as they begin the difficult task of defending their first Premier League crown in more than two decades, while Coventry are left with an early reminder of the demands awaiting them in the division.
