Raphinha, Fermin and debutants star as Barcelona sends early warning with 5-0 Elche rout in LaLiga opener
Barcelona launched their La Liga title defence in emphatic fashion as Raphinha and Fermín López both scored twice in a commanding 5-0 victory over Elche.
Barcelona made a statement at the beginning of their La Liga title defence, dismantling Elche 5-0 at the Manuel Martínez Valero in a dominant display on Sunday night.
The reigning champions quickly established control and used their pressing game to unsettle the hosts, with Raphinha opening the scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled inside the area.
The Brazilian was at the centre of Barcelona’s attacking threat throughout the match and later added a second goal after combining effectively with new signing Anthony Gordon.
Karim Adeyemi also marked his competitive debut for the Catalan club with a goal, finishing a move created by Raphinha before the interval. Barcelona maintained their authority after the restart, refusing to allow Elche back into the contest.
Gordon continued to make an impression following his summer arrival, while Fermín López took advantage of the opportunities created around him to score twice and complete the rout.
The result provided an ideal start for Hansi Flick’s side as they attempt to secure another league crown, with their attacking efficiency particularly encouraging after a disrupted pre-season.
Barcelona had not even needed to dominate possession throughout the match to remain in control, instead combining quick transitions, aggressive pressing and clinical finishing to punish their opponents.
Raphinha’s two goals and assist made him the standout performer, while Adeyemi and Gordon offered promising glimpses of what Barcelona’s revamped attack could produce this season.
The only setback came before half-time when Gavi was forced off with a leg injury, but Barcelona otherwise completed a hugely convincing opening-night performance.
