FIFPRO and SAFPU rally behind Ronwen Williams following cyber bully over World Cup loss
FIFPRO and the South African Football Players Union have strongly condemned the targeted online harassment and viral fake news directed at Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams ahead of their second World Cup match.
South Africa national team captain Ronwen Williams has publicly condemned the severe online abuse, harassment, and cyberbullying targeted at him and his squad members.
The toxic backlash intensified heavily on social media platforms following Bafana Bafana’s disappointing 2-0 defeat against co-hosts Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.
The targeted cyberbullying escalated significantly after malicious, fake quotes were falsely attributed to the goalkeeper regarding a purported lack of continental football support.
Speaking in Atlanta around the United Nations’ International Day for Countering Hate Speech, Williams defended his team’s character and strongly reminded critics across the African continent that international football players are human beings too.
In response to the growing hostility, global players’ union FIFPRO and the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) issued a joint statement standing firmly with the squad.
Both organizations fiercely condemned the abusive online behaviour, demanded immediate unity from the public, and asserted that no footballer should ever face toxic targeting over circumstances entirely beyond their control.
