Xabi Alonso joins three others on famous Premier League record

Xabi Alonso has joined Bobby Robson, Michael Laudrup and Marcelo Bielsa as only the fourth manager to oversee seven or more goals in his first two Premier League games.

Xabi Alonso has made an immediate mark on the Premier League record books after guiding Chelsea to seven goals across their opening two league matches of the 2026/27 season.

The Spanish coach became only the fourth manager in Premier League history to oversee a team scoring at least seven goals in its first two matches, joining an exclusive group that includes Bobby Robson, Michael Laudrup and Marcelo Bielsa.

Alonso’s Chelsea reached the landmark after following their 3-2 victory over Fulham with a thrilling 4-3 win against Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The result gave the Blues a perfect six points from their opening two fixtures while taking their early goal tally to seven.

Chelsea’s attacking start has been particularly striking. João Pedro scored inside 31 seconds against Fulham before Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer also found the net, while the Brazilian was again on target against his former club Brighton. Roméo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Palmer completed Chelsea’s four-goal haul in the seven-goal thriller.

That puts Alonso alongside Bobby Robson, whose side scored eight goals across their first two Premier League matches in September 1999. Michael Laudrup matched that total in August 2012, while Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United scored seven in September 2020.

The record is another indication of the attacking identity Alonso is beginning to establish at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have looked dangerous in transition and have shown considerable attacking variety, although their defensive performances remain a concern after conceding five goals across their opening two league games.

The Brighton victory was particularly chaotic. Chelsea raced into a 3-0 lead before Brighton mounted a comeback, with Malick Yalcouyé scoring and João Pedro inadvertently putting through his own net. Palmer eventually restored Chelsea’s two-goal advantage before Pascal Groß struck in stoppage time.

Alonso has nevertheless stressed that his team must remain adaptable rather than become defined by one particular style. Chelsea had only around 25 per cent possession against Brighton but still created enough attacking threat to secure their second consecutive league victory.

The next challenge will be considerably tougher, with Chelsea facing reigning champions Arsenal in their next Premier League fixture. That match should provide an early indication of whether Alonso’s explosive start can develop into a sustained challenge near the top of the table.

For now, however, Alonso has already joined an exclusive Premier League club. Only Robson, Laudrup and Bielsa had previously overseen seven or more goals from their teams in their first two Premier League matches.
