Chelsea agrees record equaling £125M sale of Enzo Fernandez to Man City
Manchester City have agreed a £125 million deal to sign Enzo Fernández from Chelsea, with the Argentina midfielder now set to complete his medical before the transfer deadline.
Manchester City have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernández for £125 million, bringing one of the summer’s longest-running transfer sagas to a dramatic conclusion on deadline day.
The 25-year-old midfielder has been given permission to undergo a medical after the two Premier League clubs finally settled on a fee, with the deal matching the British transfer record established by Liverpool’s purchase of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United last summer.
Fernández had been at the centre of uncertainty throughout the window after Chelsea set a £120m valuation and initially insisted that he would remain at Stamford Bridge once their self-imposed deadline passed without an acceptable offer.
However, City’s interest intensified after their pursuit of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo collapsed, leading Pep Guardiola’s successor, Enzo Maresca, to push for a reunion with the Argentine midfielder he previously coached at Chelsea.
Fernández’s relationship with the London club had become increasingly strained, with supporters booing him during the opening weeks of the season and the midfielder subsequently missing matches against Luton Town and Brighton.
He joined Chelsea from Benfica for a then-British record £106.8m in January 2023 and leaves after making 170 appearances, scoring 31 goals and providing 30 assists.
City have already spent heavily to rebuild their midfield this summer, signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m and Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, while Rodri’s departure to Barcelona and Tijjani Reijnders’ move to Al-Qadsiah created further room for reinforcements.
Fernández’s arrival will add another technically gifted, progressive midfielder to Maresca’s squad and reunite the player with a manager who previously brought the best out of him at Stamford Bridge.
The move remains subject to the completion of his medical and final paperwork, but the agreement represents a major late-window statement from Manchester City.
