Szoboszlai and Wirtz join Bruno Fernandes in embarrassing PL stat
Dominik Szoboszlai, Bruno Fernandes and Florian Wirtz lead an unwanted Premier League statistic after losing possession more than any other midfielders following four games.
Liverpool midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz have joined Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes at the top of an unwanted Premier League statistic after the opening four games of the season.
Szoboszlai leads the list for most times losing possession among midfielders, with the Hungarian having given the ball away 72 times so far. Fernandes follows closely with 69, while Wirtz completes the top three with 66.
- 🥇 72 – Dominik Szoboszlai
- 🥈 69 – Bruno Fernandes
- 🥉 66 – Florian Wirtz
The numbers make uncomfortable reading for three players who are expected to have major influence on their teams’ attacking play.
Szoboszlai and Wirtz have both been heavily involved in Liverpool’s build-up, while Fernandes remains central to almost everything Manchester United create.
However, the statistic also needs context. Players who constantly demand the ball, attempt progressive passes and take risks in advanced areas will naturally lose possession more often than those who play safer passes.
Still, with only four games played, Szoboszlai’s 72 turnovers stand out. Wirtz’s arrival in the top three also underlines how quickly the German has become involved in Liverpool’s attacking play, while Fernandes once again finds his name attached to an unwanted Premier League record.
