Carlos Queiroz and Ghana mutually end short-lived Black Stars reunion
Carlos Queiroz has left the Ghana national team after a brief second spell ended following defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in the opening 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
Carlos Queiroz’s second spell as Ghana coach has ended abruptly, with the Portuguese manager and the Ghana Football Association agreeing to terminate his contract after a difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The decision comes only weeks after the GFA renewed Queiroz’s mandate following his work at the 2026 World Cup, where Ghana reached the knockout stage before losing to Colombia.
His return quickly unravelled, however, as the Black Stars suffered defeats against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their opening Group C qualifiers.
Ghana’s collapse against The Gambia was particularly damaging, surrendering a two-goal lead before losing 4-2 in Accra. Queiroz accepted responsibility for the result and had previously defended his players while pointing to a significant injury crisis affecting the squad.
The 73-year-old coach had initially taken charge in April after replacing Otto Addo and was brought back in September for another qualifying campaign.
His departure now leaves Ghana searching for another coach as they attempt to recover from a poor beginning to their AFCON qualification journey.
