Emiliano Martínez reveals why he left Aston Villa for Chelsea in the summer
Emiliano Martínez says Argentina’s painful World Cup final defeat to Spain convinced him he needed a fresh start, ultimately leading to his move from Aston Villa to Chelsea.
Emiliano Martínez has revealed that the emotional pain of Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain played a major role in his decision to leave Aston Villa for Chelsea.
The goalkeeper, who helped Argentina reach another World Cup final after winning the tournament in 2022, admitted the 1-0 loss in New Jersey affected him deeply.
Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal settled a tense final, despite Martínez producing several important saves.
‘I needed a fresh start’
Martínez said he needed a change of environment to move beyond the disappointment of losing another World Cup final.
The 34-year-old subsequently completed his move to Chelsea in August, signing a three-year contract after six seasons at Villa. The transfer was worth around £7.5 million.
“I needed a fresh start at my club to get over the heartache I felt after that final,” Martínez explained.
The switch has given the Argentine an opportunity to reset his club career while remaining a key figure for his country.
Martínez’s Villa spell had already established him among the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers. He joined from Arsenal in 2020 and played a major role in the club’s rise, including their Europa League triumph last season.
His Chelsea start has been mixed, with the goalkeeper conceding 10 goals in four appearances.
However, his international form remains encouraging after he kept clean sheets against Bolivia and Burkina Faso during the latest break.
For Martínez, the Chelsea move was therefore about more than football. It was an attempt to close a painful chapter and begin again.
