Why Rayo Vallecano fans are protesting amid abandoned LaLiga clash with Athletic Club
Rayo Vallecano’s long-awaited return to their home stadium ended in controversy as repeated fan protests against president Raúl Martín Presa forced the abandonment of their La Liga encounter with Athletic Club.
Rayo Vallecano’s La Liga clash with Athletic Club was abandoned on Saturday, October 10, after repeated incidents involving objects thrown onto the pitch during protests against club president Raúl Martín Presa.
The match at the Estadio de Vallecas was halted in the 13th minute after supporters threw paper aeroplanes and small plastic balls onto the playing surface.
Despite attempts to resume the contest, further interruptions forced referee José María Sánchez Martínez to abandon the game in the 25th minute, with the score still 0-0.
The incident overshadowed Rayo’s return to their home ground after 147 days away, with the stadium having been temporarily closed following concerns raised during a safety inspection. The club had played its opening three home fixtures at Leganés’ Butarque stadium while the dispute surrounding Vallecas continued.
Growing anger against Martín Presa
The demonstration reflected longstanding frustration among Rayo supporters over Presa’s leadership, with sections of the fanbase demanding his departure.
Critics have questioned the club’s direction, investment and relationship with its supporters. Concerns have also extended to the condition of the stadium, disagreements involving players and club officials, and the treatment of the women’s team.
Presa has faced criticism over his approach to modernising the club and maintaining relations with different groups connected to Rayo. However, the president has previously disputed accusations surrounding the stadium, arguing that responsibility for resolving certain issues rests with regional authorities.
The dispute has become increasingly visible in recent months, with supporters staging demonstrations at matches and directing chants towards the club’s leadership.
La Liga condemns the incident
Saturday’s protest escalated despite warnings from stadium officials and attempts to clear the objects from the pitch. Players and match officials were forced to interrupt proceedings repeatedly before the referee decided that the fixture could not continue safely.
La Liga condemned the throwing of objects, saying such behaviour endangered safety and prevented the normal conduct of the competition. The league said a new date and kick-off time would be announced.
The abandonment leaves Rayo facing further uncertainty as tensions between supporters and the club’s leadership continue.
Although the demonstration was directed at Presa, the interruption also affected the players and travelling Athletic supporters, who had arrived expecting a competitive league fixture.
The latest scenes underline the depth of the crisis surrounding Rayo Vallecano, with the club’s return to Vallecas intended to mark a fresh start instead becoming another flashpoint in the dispute over its future.
