Infantino scraps FFE after backlash and internal revolt
Gianni Infantino has scrapped the FIFA Forward Enterprise project after widespread opposition from federations and financiers, ending the initiative amid political pressure and renewed calls for his resignation.
Gianni Infantino has abandoned plans for the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) following a wave of backlash from member associations and financiers.
The FIFA president confirmed the decision after a day of emergency meetings in which he was reportedly advised that support for the project had collapsed even among some of his closest allies.
In a statement, Infantino said the FFE was originally intended to strengthen FIFA member associations and support the development of football globally, particularly in countries most in need.
He insisted that it had always been contingent on majority backing and consultation with member associations, the FIFA Council, confederations and wider stakeholders, but acknowledged that after listening to concerns it had become clear the initiative had created divisions that were no longer in the interest of its original objectives.
The president added that “our purpose has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve” and confirming the proposal would not proceed, while also stating his intention to bring stakeholders back together in the coming weeks to continue discussions on growing the game worldwide.
The collapse of the FFE has drawn comparisons to the failed European Super League project, with critics and political figures, including UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, continuing to call for Infantino to step down.
Although those close to the FIFA president insist he has no intention of resigning or standing aside ahead of the next election, and there remains reported interest in fielding a challenger should he seek another term.
