Anthony Gordon reveals why Barcelona move changed how England views him
Anthony Gordon says his move from Newcastle to Barcelona has helped reveal the technical and tactical qualities he believes were often overlooked in England.
Anthony Gordon believes his move to Barcelona has changed the way he is viewed in England, arguing that playing in Spain has allowed supporters to appreciate qualities that were previously overshadowed by his pace and pressing.
The England international, speaking to ITV Sport, said he felt people in the Premier League largely associated him with speed and aggression rather than his technical ability and football intelligence.
Gordon explained that Barcelona’s possession-based style has given him a different platform to demonstrate those attributes, while the demands of playing for the Catalan giants have also challenged him to develop further.
The 25-year-old joined Barcelona from Newcastle United in the summer for a fee exceeding £69 million, signing a contract through 2031. Gordon said leaving the Premier League was deliberate because he wanted a fresh footballing experience and an opportunity to challenge the perception surrounding his game.
His early adaptation has strengthened that belief, with reports highlighting his contribution for Hansi Flick’s side and his growing influence in a different tactical environment.
Rather than abandoning the qualities that made him effective in England, Gordon appears to be adding another dimension to his game in Barcelona, where technical execution and decision-making are heavily emphasised.
He now hopes his performances for the Spanish champions will continue changing perceptions back home while establishing him as a more complete attacker on the international stage.
