Arsenal to contact Pro Referee over controversial Konsa penalty in Sunderland win

Arsenal will approach refereeing body Pro Ref for clarity after Mikel Arteta blasted a controversial penalty conceded by Ezri Konsa against Sunderland.

Arsenal are set to seek an official explanation from refereeing body Pro Ref after a contentious penalty decision overshadowed their Premier League outing against Sunderland.

Manager Mikel Arteta insisted the award was one of the most baffling calls he has witnessed this season. The incident occurred when defender Ezri Konsa was penalised for what officials deemed excessive holding on Sunderland’s Dan Ballard inside the box during a physical tussle for position.

Referee John Brooks made the call on the field, and it was subsequently upheld after a video assistant referee review. This prompted an immediate and pointed reaction from Arteta, who told reporters he had rewatched the footage roughly twenty times without finding any justification for the spot-kick.

He described the situation as unacceptable at the top level of English football and warned that such marginal interventions carry enough weight to alter the destiny of the title race.

Match of the Day analysts echoed his frustration, largely siding with the Gunners and arguing the contact resembled a legal wrestling motion rather than a deliberate foul, with a free-kick seen as the fairer outcome.

The club’s frustration reflects a broader unease among Premier League title challengers this season about the consistency of marginal VAR interventions in matches with major implications.

Arsenal’s push for clarity comes as they look to protect their position at the summit of the table heading into a congested run of fixtures, with the Gunners keen to avoid a repeat of similarly contentious officiating moments that have disrupted their campaigns in both domestic and European competition.
