Barcelona change Joan Gamper Trophy plans after Fulham appoints Arbeloa
Barcelona reportedly ruled out inviting Fulham for the Joan Gamper Trophy after Álvaro Arbeloa became the Premier League club’s new manager.
Barcelona reportedly changed their plans for this year’s Joan Gamper Trophy after Fulham appointed former Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa as manager.
According to Mundo Deportivo, cited by Barça Universal, the Catalan club had initially shortlisted Fulham alongside Ajax and Cruz Azul as potential opponents.
However, Arbeloa’s arrival prompted Barcelona to reconsider, given his long-standing association with Real Madrid and his unpopular image among Barça supporters.
Ajax and Cruz Azul also emerged as possible opponents, but talks failed to produce agreements because of scheduling and organisational challenges.
Barcelona subsequently reached an agreement with Egyptian champions Al Ahly, who will now face Hansi Flick’s side in the traditional pre-season fixture.
The Joan Gamper Trophy, held annually before the new campaign, serves as Barcelona’s official home presentation ahead of the La Liga season.
