Bayern Munich crush Stuttgart 5-1 to make stunning Bundesliga title defence statement
Bayern Munich began their Bundesliga title defence in emphatic fashion, overwhelming Stuttgart 5-1 at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich made an emphatic statement on the opening night of the 2026-27 Bundesliga season, dismantling Stuttgart 5-1 at the Allianz Arena to immediately underline their title ambitions.
Vincent Kompany’s side controlled much of the contest and recovered decisively after Stuttgart briefly threatened to change the course of the game.
Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring in the 21st minute, rising to meet Joshua Kimmich’s corner and give the champions a deserved advantage at half-time.
Stuttgart responded seven minutes after the restart when Josha Vagnoman volleyed past Manuel Neuer, but Bayern’s reaction was swift and ruthless.
Michael Olise restored the lead three minutes later after being released by Kimmich before Vagnoman endured a difficult spell by turning Alphonso Davies’ cross into his own net.
Bayern then took complete command, with Aleksandar Pavlovic adding a fourth in the 82nd minute after good work from substitute Ismael Saibari.
Luis Diaz completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, calmly finishing a counter-attack created by Saibari. Olise was particularly influential throughout the encounter, while Kimmich’s two assists highlighted his importance to Bayern’s attacking build-up.
The victory also extends Bayern’s impressive record in Bundesliga opening fixtures and provides an immediate boost to Kompany’s side after their German Super Cup triumph over Borussia Dortmund.
Stuttgart, who finished fourth last season and secured Champions League football, showed enough early promise to trouble the champions but ultimately could not cope with Bayern’s quality and intensity after the interval.
