Brighton fan dies at 72 following medical emergency after Villa rout

Brighton’s emphatic opening-day victory over Aston Villa was overshadowed by the death of a 72-year-old supporter who became unwell while leaving the Amex Stadium.

Brighton’s impressive start to the Premier League season was overshadowed by the tragic death of a 72-year-old supporter following Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium.

The supporter became unwell while leaving the ground and making his way towards a supporters’ club bus in the stadium’s coach park.

Emergency personnel and Brighton staff responded immediately and carried out prolonged CPR, but despite their efforts, the man could not be saved.

Brighton confirmed the death and expressed their condolences to the supporter’s family and friends, describing the circumstances as deeply distressing.

The incident cast a sombre mood over what had otherwise been a memorable afternoon for Fabian Hürzeler’s team, who produced a devastating first-half display to dismantle Villa.

Victor Lindelöf’s own goal opened the scoring before Maxim De Cuyper doubled Brighton’s advantage, with Jack Hinshelwood then scoring twice in quick succession to put the hosts four goals ahead inside 31 minutes.

Villa’s difficult afternoon worsened when João Gomes was dismissed before half-time, leaving Unai Emery’s side with an almost impossible task after the interval.

Brighton ultimately completed a comfortable victory and moved to the top of the early Premier League table, but the result was inevitably followed by sadness after news of the supporter’s death emerged.

The club also acknowledged the efforts of the paramedics, medical teams, police officers and stewards who worked together to provide emergency treatment at the scene.
