FIFA rejects objections from Egypt and Iran over Seattle Pride flag display
FIFA has confirmed that rainbow flags will be permitted inside Seattle Stadium for the World Cup fixture between Egypt and Iran, overriding formal protests submitted by both competing football federations.
FIFA has officially rejected formal complaints from Egypt and Iran, confirming that rainbow flags will be permitted inside Seattle Stadium during Friday’s highly sensitive World Cup encounter. The fixture overlaps with Seattle’s annual Pride Weekend celebrations.
Both competing football federations strongly objected to the inclusive displays, citing statutes on political neutrality and arguing the activities heavily conflicted with their societal, religious, and cultural traditions.
Despite the intense off-pitch diplomatic friction, FIFA maintained that the 2026 tournament remains an inclusive event welcoming all fans.
Governing officials clarified that while the stadium will allow personal symbols of diversity, the match itself is not a designated “Pride Match.”
Meanwhile, coaches Hossam Hassan and Amir Ghalenoei have deliberately sidestepped the controversy, stating their players are strictly focused on sporting matters.
