Football supporters from across the world have launched a petition demanding Gianni Infantino resign as FIFA president, adding to the growing pressure on the governing body’s leader following his controversial attempt to bring private investment into future World Cup profits.
According to reports, the campaign, backed by fan organisations including Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa and the Independent Supporters Council in North America, is calling for Infantino’s departure and a major overhaul of FIFA’s governance.
The petition, promoted under the hashtag #InfantinoOut, follows the collapse of FIFA’s proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would have allowed private investors to acquire a stake in the commercial rights of major tournaments.
Infantino abandoned the proposal after opposition from football authorities intensified, with UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation among those expressing serious concerns.
FIFA had proposed using the commercial venture to generate additional funds for its 211 member associations, but the plan quickly became a major source of division.
UEFA had even discussed a potential boycott of future FIFA competitions if the proposal remained in place.
The backlash has continued despite the plan being withdrawn. Infantino has faced criticism from senior football officials, while FIFA chief operating officer Kevin Lamour was dismissed after publicly opposing the investment scheme.
FIFA vice-president Sandor Csanyi has also said he no longer has confidence in Infantino, describing Lamour’s dismissal as a decisive moment in his loss of trust.
The latest petition therefore represents another challenge to Infantino’s leadership as he prepares to seek a fourth term in FIFA’s 2027 presidential election.
Supporters behind the campaign argue that the controversy exposed deeper problems surrounding transparency, accountability and the concentration of power within FIFA.
For the fan groups, withdrawing the investment proposal is not enough, with their campaign now focused on forcing wider institutional changes and restoring confidence in football’s world governing body.
