Matteo Guendouzi sparks chaos in Fenerbahçe’s Champions League victory over Lyon
Fenerbahçe’s Champions League return was overshadowed by a fiery post-match confrontation involving Mattéo Guendouzi and members of the Lyon camp.
Mattéo Guendouzi found himself at the heart of dramatic scenes after Fenerbahçe defeated Lyon 2-1 to secure a place in the Champions League league phase for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
The French midfielder, who previously played for Lyon’s fierce rivals Marseille, was subjected to heavy jeers during the second leg before his celebrations after the final whistle inflamed tensions.
Guendouzi appeared to taunt the home supporters and celebrated with gestures linked to Marseille, prompting angry reactions from members of the Lyon camp.
The situation quickly escalated, with players, staff and security personnel becoming involved in confrontations both on the pitch and around the tunnel.
Guendouzi later defended his actions, saying Lyon supporters had repeatedly targeted his family with insults during the match and arguing that supporters should expect a response when they engage in provocation.
Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso, however, criticised the celebrations and suggested Guendouzi should have shown greater restraint after the victory.
Despite the controversy, Fenerbahçe completed a memorable 3-2 aggregate success, ending a lengthy absence from European football’s elite competition. The Turkish side had entered the decisive fixture with the tie level at 1-1 and held their nerve in a tense contest to eliminate Lyon on their home ground.
The qualification represents a major achievement for Fenerbahçe and provides the club with another opportunity to compete against Europe’s leading teams.
UEFA could now face scrutiny over the post-match disorder, while Guendouzi may also come under disciplinary consideration depending on the match reports and evidence reviewed after the incident.
