Brazil advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 after securing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Japan during Monday’s Round of 32 clash in Houston.
Japan initially took the lead in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano capitalised on a midfield error to slot home. However, Brazil rallied in the second half, intensifying the pressure to breakdown Japan’s disciplined defensive lines.
The five-time champions equalised in the 56th minute through a Casemiro header, courtesy of a precise Gabriel Magalhães cross.
Just as extra time loomed, Bruno Guimarães delivered a superb pass to substitute Gabriel Martinelli, who struck the decisive match-winner in the 96th minute.
The late Arsenal strike completed the turnaround, breaking Japanese hearts in final seconds.
