Granit Xhaka snubs Alonso reunion at Chelsea, reassures Sunderland
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has rejected a transfer to Chelsea after performing a U-turn, choosing instead to remain at the Stadium of Light and guide the Black Cats into their upcoming European campaign.
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has officially rejected a summer transfer to Chelsea following a sudden change of heart.
The 33-year-old midfielder was initially open to moving to Stamford Bridge for a reunion with newly appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. However, following discussions with the Black Cats, the Swiss international chosen to completely shut down the prospective switch.
Sunderland maintained a firm “not for sale” stance throughout the brief saga, having immediately rejected an initial lowball £8 million opening bid from the Blues.
Ultimately, Xhaka’s deep relationship with the Wearside fanbase and his desire to lead the club into the Europa League next season proved decisive. Head coach Régis Le Bris can now safely plan for their historic upcoming campaign.
