Inter Miami appoints Leo Messi’s former teammate as fourth coach in three years
Inter Miami have appointed former Argentina international Kily Gonzalez as their new head coach, handing him the task of reviving the MLS champions’ fortunes alongside Lionel Messi.
Inter Miami have appointed former Argentina international Cristian “Kily” Gonzalez as their new head coach, replacing Guillermo Hoyos as the club seeks to halt a worrying slide in form.
The 52-year-old Argentine takes over at a crucial stage of the season, with Miami enduring a five-match winless run and facing increasing pressure to return to winning ways.
Gonzalez will not immediately take his place on the touchline, however, as he must first obtain the necessary United States work permit, meaning Hoyos will remain in temporary charge until the new coaching staff arrives.
The appointment also creates a notable reunion with Lionel Messi, whom Gonzalez played alongside for Argentina during the early stages of the forward’s international career.
Gonzalez brings considerable playing experience from his time with clubs including Valencia and Inter Milan, although his managerial career has been considerably less decorated.
He has previously coached Rosario Central, Union de Santa Fe and Platense in Argentina, gaining experience in a demanding domestic environment but without winning a major trophy as a manager.
His immediate challenge at Inter Miami will be considerably bigger, with the club expected to compete for silverware given the quality and experience within its squad.
The Herons remain heavily dependent on Messi’s influence, while the presence of other established names means Gonzalez will inherit a team built to challenge rather than simply develop.
His arrival follows Hoyos’ spell in charge after Javier Mascherano’s departure earlier in the year. Although Hoyos initially helped steady the team, results have subsequently deteriorated, prompting Inter Miami to make another change in the dugout.
Gonzalez must now quickly establish his tactical approach, restore confidence and keep Miami’s postseason ambitions alive.
