Juventus ends Arthur Melo nightmare after six years with €6m financial blow
Juventus have officially ended Arthur Melo’s six-year spell at the club, accepting an estimated €6 million financial impact as the Brazilian midfielder departs.
Juventus have officially parted ways with Arthur Melo, ending a six-year spell that never developed into the successful partnership the club had envisaged when they signed the Brazilian midfielder from Barcelona in 2020.
The Turin giants confirmed the contract termination on Friday, with the decision leaving them with an estimated €6 million negative financial impact linked to the adjustment of the player’s remaining book value.
Arthur arrived at Juventus as part of the high-profile deal that saw Miralem Pjanic move in the opposite direction, with Juventus valuing the Brazilian’s registration rights at €72 million, potentially rising by another €10 million through bonuses.
His time in Turin, however, failed to match the expectations attached to that valuation. Arthur made 63 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and registering one assist before gradually falling out of the club’s plans.
The midfielder subsequently embarked on a series of loan spells, representing Liverpool, Fiorentina, Girona and his former club Gremio, but none of those moves resulted in a permanent transfer.
His latest return to Juventus followed a season back at Gremio, although he had not featured in a competitive match for the Bianconeri since the 2021-22 campaign.
The termination brings an end to a complicated period in Arthur’s career and closes the book on one of Juventus’ most disappointing midfield investments of recent years.
The 30-year-old is now free to determine the next chapter of his career after Juventus chose to sever the remaining contractual ties rather than continue carrying a player who had become surplus to requirements.
The move also allows the Serie A club to clear another long-standing issue from their squad as they continue reshaping their midfield options under Luciano Spalletti.
