Karetsas hospitalised after collapsing on Champions League debut
Borussia Dortmund teenager Konstantinos Karetsas was taken to hospital after experiencing circulation problems during his Champions League debut against Villarreal.
Borussia Dortmund were left concerned after teenage summer signing Konstantinos Karetsas was taken to hospital following a worrying incident during Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Villarreal.
The 18-year-old Greece international suddenly went down without any apparent contact around the 23rd minute at Signal Iduna Park, having just completed a pass before signalling that something was wrong.
Medical staff quickly attended to the midfielder, who received treatment while lying on the pitch before being carried away on a stretcher.
Dortmund later confirmed that Karetsas had experienced circulation problems and was taken to hospital for further examinations, with the club indicating that he was doing well under the circumstances.
Karetsas had only recently joined Dortmund from Belgian club Genk on a long-term contract after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most highly regarded young talents.
He had already made an encouraging start to life in Germany, recording an assist in the Bundesliga before his European debut.
His departure added to Dortmund’s concerns after fellow Greek recruit Giannis Konstantelias suffered an ACL injury earlier in the campaign.
Dortmund eventually recovered to beat Villarreal 3-2, but the result was overshadowed by the concern surrounding Karetsas.
