Manchester United request travel start for first ground rebuild in 14 years
Manchester United have requested to play their opening match of the 2026/27 Premier League season away from home to allow grounds staff enough time to complete Old Trafford’s first full pitch replacement in 14 years.
Manchester United have formally requested that the Premier League schedule their opening match of the upcoming season away from home.
This rare logistical appeal stems from an ongoing, extensive renovation project at Old Trafford, where the playing surface is undergoing a complete, ground-up replacement for the first time since 2012.
The multi-week project, led by head groundsman Tony Sinclair, involves stripping the pitch to its foundations to install an upgraded drainage system and a state-of-the-art hybrid grass surface.
Additionally, the club is extending the grassed perimeter and adding critical protective padding to the masonry walls below the pitch slope to significantly reduce player injury risks during matchdays.
