Kylian Mbappé became the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading scorer after surpassing Lionel Messi’s career goals tally, although France missed out on the final.

Kylian Mbappé became the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading scorer after netting twice in France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the 2026 third-place playoff.

The Real Madrid forward moved onto 22 career World Cup goals, overtaking Lionel Messi, while also extending his lead in the tournament’s Golden Boot race with 10 goals.

Despite reaching the historic milestone, Mbappé admitted he would have preferred a place in the World Cup final over the individual record. Messi, representing Argentina in the final against Spain, still has an opportunity to reclaim the scoring record.

Mbappé first announced himself on the World Cup stage in 2018 and has continued to build one of the competition’s greatest goalscoring legacies.
