NFF sacks Super Falcons Technical Crew after historic World Cup failure
The NFF has dismissed the Super Falcons’ technical crew after Nigeria’s historic failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The Nigeria Football Federation has ordered the Super Falcons’ technical crew, led by head coach Justine Madugu, to step down with immediate effect following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The decision was announced by the NFF Executive Committee on Monday, August 17, without the federation giving a specific reason for the move.
PUNCH reported that the decision follows a disappointing WAFCON campaign in Morocco, where Nigeria were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals before suffering another setback against South Africa in the subsequent World Cup play-off.
The South Africans secured a 2-1 victory, ending Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the tournament in Brazil and bringing an unprecedented end to the Falcons’ record of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
The latest development also comes days after Madugu apologised to Nigerians and accepted responsibility for the team’s failure, while the NFF had begun examining what went wrong during the campaign.
A Difficult WAFCON Campaign
Nigeria entered the tournament as defending African champions but endured a turbulent campaign from the opening match.
The Falcons suffered a shock defeat to Malawi, who were making their WAFCON debut, before recovering enough to reach the knockout stage.
However, their campaign ended in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, a result that denied Nigeria an automatic route to the 2027 World Cup.
Cameroon subsequently went on to win the tournament, defeating Malawi 3-0 in the final to claim their first WAFCON title.
World Cup Hopes Finally Ended
The Falcons were handed another opportunity through the African play-off route but could not take it.
South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-1, with Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane scoring for Banyana Banyana before the Falcons’ late response proved insufficient.
The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament and extended the consequences of their poor WAFCON showing.
The NFF has yet to announce who will replace Madugu and his technical staff, leaving the federation with the task of deciding how best to rebuild the nine-time African champions after one of the most disappointing campaigns in their history.
