Premier League admits Arsenal were denied Late penalty vs. Aston Villa
Arsenal have received official confirmation that a late challenge on Bruno Guimaraes should have resulted in a penalty during their narrow victory over Aston Villa.
Arsenal have been given a fresh ruling over a controversial incident from their 1-0 Premier League victory against Aston Villa, with the league’s Key Match Incidents Panel determining that the Gunners should have been awarded a late penalty.
The incident occurred in stoppage time when Ian Maatsen challenged Bruno Guimaraes inside the Villa penalty area, with the officials initially allowing play to continue.
A subsequent review by the independent panel concluded that Maatsen made contact with Guimaraes’ standing leg while failing to win the ball, making the challenge reckless and worthy of a spot-kick.
The panel also determined that the incident represented a clear and obvious error that should have triggered VAR intervention. In addition, Maatsen should have received a second yellow card, which would have resulted in his dismissal.
Arsenal ultimately held on to secure all three points, with Bukayo Saka scoring the only goal of the match.
The verdict nevertheless provides further confirmation that the champions benefited from neither the on-field decision nor the subsequent VAR assessment during the late incident.
The Premier League introduced the KMI review system to provide independent assessments of major refereeing decisions, with the panel made up of former players or coaches alongside representatives from the league and professional refereeing body.
Arsenal have since maintained their perfect start to the campaign, beating Chelsea 2-1 in their next league fixture, while the Villa decision has added another talking point to the growing scrutiny surrounding VAR and refereeing standards.
