Real Madrid close in on Thibaut Courtois contract extension
Real Madrid are reportedly closing in on a contract extension for Thibaut Courtois that would keep the Belgian goalkeeper at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2028.
Real Madrid are reportedly close to finalising a contract extension for Thibaut Courtois, with the Spanish giants keen to retain their first-choice goalkeeper beyond the 2026/27 season.
According to reports, the proposed agreement would extend the Belgian international’s stay at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2028. The development reflects the club’s continued confidence in the 34-year-old, whose current deal is understood to run until June 2027.
Courtois remains indispensable
Courtois has established himself as one of Real Madrid’s most important players since joining from Chelsea in 2018. His performances in decisive matches have helped the club maintain its position among Europe’s elite.
His standout display in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool remains a defining moment of his Madrid career. The goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves to secure a 1-0 victory and was named man of the match as Madrid claimed their 14th European Cup.
Injury setback fails to diminish Madrid’s trust
A serious knee injury in 2023 disrupted Courtois’ progress and kept him sidelined for an extended period. However, he successfully returned to action and reclaimed his position as the club’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.
Madrid’s reported willingness to extend his contract also suggests that age is not currently a major concern in their assessment of his value.
The club are prioritising continuity between the posts rather than immediately pursuing an established replacement. Although an official announcement is still awaited, an extension through 2028 would provide further stability as Madrid plan for the coming seasons.
