Ander Herrera has returned to Real Zaragoza with a unique financial sacrifice, donating his mandatory salary to the club foundation as he attempts to help his boyhood side climb back up Spanish football.
Ander Herrera has completed one of football’s most heartfelt homecomings after returning to Real Zaragoza 15 years after leaving the club, with the former Manchester United midfielder choosing to donate his salary to the team’s foundation.
The 37-year-old joined Zaragoza from Boca Juniors on a free transfer and has signed a one-year deal as the Spanish side attempt to recover from their fall into the third tier.
Herrera initially wanted to play without receiving any payment, but competition regulations require him to earn the minimum salary, which will instead be donated in full to the club’s foundation.
The midfielder, who also played for Athletic Club and Paris Saint-Germain, sees the move as an opportunity to give something back to the club where he developed as a player and grew up as a supporter.
Zaragoza have endured a difficult period since their relegation from La Liga in 2013, eventually dropping into the Primera Federación after years of struggles in the second tier.
Herrera has now returned determined to help change the club’s fortunes, bringing experience from a career that includes major honours in England and France.
Rather than dwelling on Zaragoza’s decline, the veteran has urged the club to focus on building for the future, with promotion the immediate target.
His return has also been framed as more than a footballing decision, as Herrera hopes to influence younger players and help establish a stronger culture around the club.
After representing some of Europe’s biggest teams, the midfielder is now prioritising identity, loyalty and the chance to finish his playing career where his professional journey began.
