Sunderland fans booed Bruno Guimaraes after the midfielder came off the bench for Arsenal to inspire a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light with his first goal in the colours of the Premier League champions.

Bruno Guimarães was greeted with a hostile reception after coming on at halftime to replace Myles Lewis-Skelly, but the Brazilian had the perfect response as he produced a stunning strike to break the deadlock just two minutes before the hour mark.

The goal also came at the right time for Mikel Arteta’s team after David Raya had denied Enzo Le Fee from the spot following a controversial penalty awarded by referee David Brooks, who judged Ezri Konsa to have fouled Dan Ballard with eyes off the ball.

Bukayo Saka scored a late penalty to seal the win in injury time, with the Black Cats’ defender Reinildo receiving his marching orders following a second booking after bringing down the England international.

Bruno Guimaraes was booed by Sunderland fans during the game due to his association with their Tyne–Wear rivals, Newcastle United.

The Brazilian spent four and a half years with the Magpies following his move from Lyon in the winter transfer window of 2022, winning the Carabao Cup last year and ending the club’s prolonged 70-year trophy drought.

Guimaraes faced Sunderland twice in the Tyne–Wear derby, winning one and losing the other, but this win with Arsenal represents his first taste of victory against the Black Cats in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old had the last laugh, though, scoring the opening goal to send the Gunners on their way to a very important victory.
