“Worst year of my life”: William Saliba opens up on grief and early Arsenal struggles
Arsenal defender William Saliba and a close confidant have opened up about the immense emotional and professional hardships he endured following the tragic passing of his mother shortly after his high-profile move to North London in 2019.
Arsenal central defender William Saliba has opened up about the profound personal tragedy and professional hardship that clouded his initial move to North London.
Following a highly anticipated €30 million transfer in 2019, the young French international found himself relegated to the club’s Under-23 squad. The sudden lack of first-team football severely impacted his morale during an incredibly isolating period.
The professional setback coincided directly with the heartbreaking loss of his mother, whom Saliba described as his absolute everything.
Describing it explicitly as the worst year of his life, the defender credited the supportive people around him for helping him endure the immense grief. The combined weight of personal tragedy and sporting stagnation made his early integration into English football exceptionally difficult.
Providing further insight, Saliba’s close friend Atef Konaté revealed that the center-back intentionally chose to hide his immense grief from the coaching staff.
Driven by immense pride and a desire to earn his place strictly on merit, Saliba refused to seek sympathetic treatment. Despite struggling with a language barrier at the time, he remained completely adamant that he would never play out of pity.
