Cody Gakpo has reportedly decided to leave Liverpool for Manchester City, with Tottenham missing out on one of their leading attacking targets.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has reportedly chosen Manchester City as his next destination, with the Netherlands international edging closer to a move away from Anfield in a major development at the end of the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old had been weighing up three possibilities — remaining with Liverpool, joining Tottenham or moving to Manchester City — but reports indicate that he has now opted for the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City’s interest has intensified as they reshape their attack following the departures of Savinho and Omar Marmoush to Tottenham, leaving manager Enzo Maresca with additional options needed in the forward line.
Cody Gakpo’s versatility is understood to be a major attraction, having regularly operated from the left for Liverpool while also possessing the ability to play centrally.
The potential transfer has been helped by Liverpool’s imminent arrival of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, with the Reds agreeing a package worth up to £123 million for the France international.
Barcola’s preferred position overlaps with Gakpo’s usual role, potentially making his departure more practical as Liverpool reshape their attacking options under new manager Andoni Iraola.
Gakpo has also remained influential for Liverpool despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, providing the assist for Alexander Isak’s equaliser during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.
