John Obi Mikel urges Man United to hand Unai Emery full control in bid to revive club
John Obi Mikel believes Unai Emery is the ideal candidate to rebuild Manchester United, urging the club to give the Aston Villa manager the resources and authority needed to restore their competitiveness.
Former Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has urged Manchester United to make Unai Emery their leading managerial target, insisting the Aston Villa boss should be given substantial financial backing and authority to rebuild the struggling Premier League club.
United have endured a difficult campaign, with Michael Carrick under mounting pressure after a series of disappointing results left the team 16th in the league standings.
Despite discussions surrounding his future, Carrick remains in charge ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea.
Mikel rejects Howe and Nagelsmann
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel dismissed Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as his preferred candidates, backing Emery to oversee a fresh start at Old Trafford.
“Neither. I would go for Unai Emery. I don’t think he leaves [Aston Villa] but listen, if you give him the f***ing keys.”
He added that United must provide the Spaniard with the resources and backing required to implement his vision.
“If you give him an open chequebook and say: ‘Listen, Unai, we don’t want to go down this route anymore, we’re tired, the fans are sick and tired of what’s happening at the football club. We want to press the reset button and believe you are the man.'”
Emery’s Villa success attracts attention
Emery’s work at Aston Villa has strengthened his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished coaches. His tactical organisation and ability to make Villa competitive against established sides have attracted praise from several football figures.
However, convincing him to leave Villa Park could prove difficult. The 54-year-old is contracted to the club until 2029 and has indicated that he remains committed to its project.
