‘Keep your mouth shut’ – Paul Scholes launches brutal attack on Bruno Fernandes
Paul Scholes has criticised Bruno Fernandes for speaking out after Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at Hull, arguing the captain should have focused on his own performance.
Paul Scholes has launched a strong criticism of Bruno Fernandes after the Manchester United captain publicly expressed his frustration following the club’s shock 2-0 defeat at Hull City.
Fernandes accused United of repeating mistakes from last season, particularly their failure to press effectively, control away matches and defend set pieces, but Scholes believes the midfielder should have been more restrained given his own performance.
The former United star argued that Fernandes did not do enough to influence the game and therefore should not have been so outspoken about his teammates immediately afterwards.
United were beaten by goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, both coming from set-piece situations, as newly promoted Hull secured a historic victory on their return to the Premier League.
Scholes also questioned whether Manchester United’s summer midfield recruitment has actually improved the team, pointing to the performances of new arrivals Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos during the defeat.
Both players were substituted as Michael Carrick attempted to change the game, while United struggled to turn their possession into meaningful attacking opportunities.
Fernandes’ comments have therefore added another layer to the early scrutiny surrounding Carrick’s side, with United needing a rapid response after an opening-day result that exposed familiar weaknesses.
The defeat was particularly damaging because Hull had not beaten United in a league meeting for 52 years, while the result marked their first Premier League victory over the Red Devils.
Scholes’ intervention now places additional attention on Fernandes’ role as captain and whether he can lead by example when United attempt to recover from their disappointing start.
