UEFA president and vice president of FIFA Aleksander Čeferin boycotted the World Cup final in protest over the controversial decision to lift Folarin Balogun’s suspension following political intervention, alongside wider organizational disputes.

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin deliberately skipped the World Cup final in New Jersey as a direct protest against FIFA’s administration.

The primary catalyst was FIFA’s controversial choice to suspend US striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match red card ban following political dialogue with US President Donald Trump.

UEFA strongly condemned the reversal as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable,” accusing the global governing body of allowing political pressure to compromise the tournament’s integrity.

Beyond the Balogun affair, Čeferin’s absence highlighted deeper institutional friction between UEFA and FIFA.

The European chief was reportedly frustrated by US authorities denying entry to Somalian referee Omar Artan, high ticket prices, and new operational changes like extended half-time shows.

By staying away from the final, Čeferin sent a clear message regarding UEFA’s dissatisfaction with FIFA’s governance standards.
