Arsène Wenger breaks silence on FFE and Infantino controversy
Arsène Wenger has clarified his position on FIFA’s abandoned Forward Enterprise proposal, insisting he was not involved and supporting its withdrawal in favour of an independent and transparent organisation.
Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has addressed the controversy surrounding Gianni Infantino’s failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, revealing that he only learned about the plan through media reports.
Wenger, who serves as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, said he had no involvement in developing the strategy.
In a statement, Wenger explained that his responsibilities at FIFA focus on football development, including data analysis, online training programmes, youth academies and competitions worldwide.
He also works as a technical adviser to the International Football Association Board (IFAB).
The FFE proposal aimed to create a FIFA-owned commercial subsidiary and raise up to $4.2 billion from private investors by selling minority stakes. The plan was intended to increase funding for football development but faced criticism over transparency and governance concerns before being abandoned.
Wenger described the decision to withdraw the project as “absolutely necessary and beyond question”, adding that he believes FIFA must remain independent and serve football with commitment, transparency and integrity.
The former Arsenal boss’ comments come as pressure continues to grow on Infantino following the collapse of the proposal. Several football associations have withdrawn support for his potential re-election campaign, while UEFA has criticised the leadership and handling of the situation.
FIFA has faced increasing scrutiny from within its own organisation, with senior figures also raising concerns about the process behind the FFE plan. Wenger’s statement adds to calls for greater clarity and accountability as football’s governing body attempts to move forward from the controversy.
