Bruno Fernandes and Florian Wirtz feature in unwanted Premier League stat
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes leads the Premier League for possession losses after six games, with 106, two more than closest challenger Anton Stach.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has lost possession more times than any other outfield player in the Premier League this season, recording 106 instances after the opening six games.
The Portuguese midfielder leads the ranking with two more possession losses than Anton Stach, who has registered 104. Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White follows with 99, while Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz has lost possession 98 times.
Brentford forward Kevin Schade completes the top five with 97, highlighting how frequently several attacking players surrender the ball during matches.
Bruno Fernandes leads the unwanted ranking
Fernandes’ position at the top of the list reflects his prominent role in Manchester United’s attacking play. As the team’s creative focal point, he regularly attempts forward passes, switches of play and ambitious deliveries designed to unlock opposition defences.
Those responsibilities naturally involve risk, although the number of times a player loses possession does not, by itself, determine their overall performance or contribution to the team.
The 31-year-old’s figures will nevertheless attract attention as United look to improve their consistency under pressure.
His ability to create chances and dictate attacking moves remains important, making the balance between creativity and ball retention a key consideration, but he has so far been found wanting this campaign.
Aside from his masterclass in the Gameweek 2 victory over Ipswich Town, Fernandes has been far off the player that won the PFA Player of the Year award, and that remains evident on Man United performances.
Eight players feature in the ranking
The statistics also include several established midfielders and forwards who carry significant creative or attacking responsibilities for their respective clubs.
Granit Xhaka has recorded 94 possession losses, placing him sixth, while Marcus Tavernier follows with 92. Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn completes the eight-player list with 91.
The figures underline how often players involved in building attacks and progressing the ball can feature prominently in possession-loss statistics.
PL’s leading players: Possession lost
- 1. Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) — 106
- 2. Anton Stach — (Leeds United) 104
- 3. Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) — 99
- 4. Florian Wirtz (Liverpool) — 98
- 5. Kevin Schade (Brentford) — 97
- 6. Granit Xhaka — 94
- 7. Marcus Tavernier — 92
- 8. John McGinn (Aston Villa) — 91
The ranking covers the first six games of the Premier League season. While Fernandes leads the list, the likes of the others, especially Florian Wirtz has equally endured an underwhelming start to the season.
