Desire Doure inspires victory as PSG beat Aston Villa to retain UEFA Super Cup crown
Désiré Doué’s second-half goal earned Paris Saint-Germain a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa and a second consecutive UEFA Super Cup title.
Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg on Wednesday, securing the trophy for a second consecutive year.
The Champions League holders overcame a spirited Villa side to begin their campaign with another European honour.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead in the 20th minute with a powerful finish. Villa responded just before half-time when 17-year-old Brian Madjo volleyed home John McGinn’s cross to become the youngest player to score in the competition.
Désiré Doué restored PSG’s advantage in the 61st minute after running onto Ousmane Dembélé’s pass. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR review overturned the decision and confirmed PSG’s winner.
Villa continued to threaten after falling behind, forcing PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov into important saves. Unai Emery’s side created opportunities but could not find another equaliser as PSG defended their lead during the closing stages.
The victory makes PSG the first club since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017 to win successive UEFA Super Cups. It also gives Luis Enrique’s side the first trophy of a season in which they could potentially compete for six major honours.
For Villa, the defeat ended their hopes of adding the Super Cup to the Europa League trophy they won last season. Despite the setback, Madjo’s historic goal and an energetic performance offered encouragement as Emery’s team begins another European campaign.
