Ferran Torres double on debut rescues PSG after Rennes threaten major upset in Ligue 1 opener

Ferran Torres produced a decisive second-half cameo, scoring twice to help PSG recover from a two-goal deficit and draw 2-2 with Rennes.

Paris Saint-Germain were forced to settle for a point after Ferran Torres came off the bench to inspire a dramatic 2-2 comeback against Rennes in their opening Ligue 1 fixture.

The French champions endured a difficult first half at Roazhon Park, falling two goals behind after Sebastian Szymanski opened the scoring before Esteban Lepaul doubled Rennes’ advantage shortly before the interval.

PSG struggled to turn their possession into clear chances and appeared destined to begin their title defence with a damaging defeat.

Luis Enrique responded at half-time by introducing Torres and Mika Godts, and the changes immediately gave the visitors greater attacking threat.

Torres eventually changed the complexion of the contest in the 71st minute, finishing calmly to reduce the deficit and give PSG renewed belief.

The Spain international then completed the comeback 11 minutes later, meeting a Fabian Ruiz delivery with a well-directed header that left the Rennes defence unable to respond.

Rennes still had opportunities to reclaim the lead late in the match, but PSG held on to avoid an opening-day loss.

The result means the reigning champions begin their campaign with one point, while Rennes will feel they missed an opportunity to claim a major scalp after surrendering a two-goal advantage.

Torres, meanwhile, enjoyed an immediate impact and emerged as the standout figure from PSG’s first league outing, giving Enrique an early indication of the attacking influence his new signing can provide.

PSG had been widely expected to challenge for another Ligue 1 title, but their comeback at Rennes also highlighted areas that will require attention as the season progresses.
